About 3 months healthily, but you can keep them for 4-5 if you take really good care of them. You go in every month for a tidy up cut where they replace ones that are looking shabby, and if you keep up with that they can last even longer. Do they hurt? Not at all! I am pretty gentle with my hair, but I can't even feel them in my head. Won't the bonds melt if put up to an iron? Yes, but I wouldn't even be able to get a curling iron that close to my scalp without burning it. Can you go swimming in it? Probably not... it's not even that great for your normal hair (if you are blonde). I will still sometimes but probably only in moderation.
